Budget 2026 could be presented on a Sunday, a first since 2000: What does it mean for investors and markets?
While a Sunday Budget would be a first, presenting Budgets on weekends is not unprecedented. Budget 2025, under Sitharaman, was presented on a Saturday, and Budget 2015, under Arun Jaitley, was also presented on Saturday on February 28, 2015.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her ninth consecutive Union Budget for 2026-27, which will also be India's 80th Budget since Independence.
The Budget Session of Parliament is expected to begin on January 28, 2026, with the customary address by the President to the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Since 2017, the Union Budget has been presented at 11 am on February 1. Arun Jaitley introduced this change to ensure faster implementation of budget proposals from the start of the financial year.
Why is Budget presented on February 1 every year?
Since Budget 2017-18, India has presented the Union Budget on February 1, replacing the long-standing tradition of presenting it on February 28.SR Patnaik, Partner (head - taxation), Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, told ET Wealth Online the reason behind the shift is to enable the Parliament to pass a single Appropriation Bill before 31 March, doing away with the requirement for Vote on Account.
Patnaik says: "This removed the need of ministries and departments to obtain expenditure approvals prior to the commencement of the financial year and allows them to operationalize all the schemes and projects from the commencement of the next financial year on April 1."
Has the Budget ever been presented on a Sunday earlier?
While a Sunday Budget would be a first since 2000, presenting Budgets on weekends is not unprecedented. Budget 2025, under Sitharaman, was presented on a Saturday, and Budget 2015, under Arun Jaitley, was also presented on Saturday on February 28, 2015.Dr Sachin Sharma, Managing Partner, KSV Tax Consultants, says the Union Budget has a fascinating history, with most presentations occurring on Saturdays, making weekends a rare choice.
A significant instance was the 1999-2000 Budget, presented on 27 February 1999 by Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha. This year marked a notable shift from the traditional 5 pm presentation time to 11 am, moving away from British customs.
According to Sharma, "There are no constitutional or procedural barriers preventing the Budget from being presented on a weekend. The primary consideration is the Parliamentary calendar, which allows for exceptional sessions on Saturdays or Sundays for crucial business, including the Budget."
Sitharaman on track to set new record
If this schedule holds, Sitharaman is also on track to set another record. She will become the first finance minister to present nine consecutive Union Budgets, further cementing her position among India's longest-serving finance ministers. This would bring her closer to the record held by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who presented a total of 10 Budgets across two stints, six between 1959 and 1964, and four between 1967 and 1969. Among other finance ministers, P Chidambaram has presented nine Budgets, while Pranab Mukherjee presented eight Budgets.
Sitharaman, appointed India's first full-time woman finance minister in 2019, continues to hold the portfolio into the Modi government's third term.
What does Budget presentation on a Sunday mean for investors?
February 1, 2026, falls on a Sunday this year, which coincides with Guru Ravidas Jayanti. Government offices and stock markets are usually closed on Sundays, unless stated otherwise. This would give investors and the government time to review the Budget before the stock markets reopen on Monday.Presenting the budget on weekends or Fridays allows time for stock markets to react and for the government to get feedback from respective stakeholders.
From a parliamentary and administrative perspective, a Sunday presentation helps maintain the 1 February discipline, ensuring sufficient time for Parliament to pass the Budget before 1 April, says Dr Sharma.
Sharma says, "It provides MPs with adequate time to debate, examine Demands for Grants, and approve the Finance Bill. However, it does require a special parliamentary sitting and additional logistical arrangements for staff, security, and media, which, while challenging, are manageable."
For financial markets, presenting the Budget on a Sunday can be beneficial.
"Since markets are closed, it prevents sudden speculative reactions, giving investors time to read, analyse, and plan before trading resumes on Monday. Media coverage also improves, as the day is free from weekday distractions, allowing for more detailed reporting, discussion, and dissemination of the Budget's implications," adds Dr Sharma.
Dr Sharma says choosing Sunday over the next working day, such as Monday, helps maintain the continuity of the Budget cycle and avoids compressing parliamentary business.
"Overall, while minor logistical adjustments are needed, a Sunday Budget supports better planning, smoother policy implementation, and clearer communication to markets, businesses, and the public," he adds.
Following the usual convention, the Economic Survey is presented a day before the Union Budget. If this practice continues, the Survey could be tabled on Saturday, January 31, while the Budget may be presented on Sunday, February 1, 2026. However, no final decision has been taken yet, and the government has not issued any official announcement.
