Importance of biometric authentication
As the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) celebrates Digital Payments Awareness Week (March 10-16, 2025), the focus is on promoting safe and efficient digital transactions. In line with this vision, Mastercard highlights five key benefits of biometric authentication in digital payments:
2/6
Multi-Factor authentication
Biometric authentication strengthens security by incorporating multi-factor authentication (MFA). This means users must verify their identity through at least two factors—such as a password (something they know) and biometric verification (something they are). This additional layer makes unauthorized access significantly more challenging.
3/6
Reduced risk of identity theft
Unlike passwords or PINs, which can be stolen or guessed, biometric markers like fingerprints or facial scans are unique to each individual and nearly impossible to replicate. This makes biometric authentication a powerful tool in preventing identity theft and fraud in digital transactions.

Elimination of card theft risks
Traditional debit and credit card payments pose risks if cards are lost or stolen. With biometric authentication, payments can be processed directly through a fingerprint or facial scan, reducing dependence on physical cards and eliminating the risk of theft or unauthorized transactions.

Secure and Contactless Transactions
The demand for contactless payments surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, and biometric authentication has played a pivotal role in making transactions both secure and convenient. Solutions like Mastercard's Payment Passkey Service (piloted in India in 2024) allow users to authorize payments via biometrics on their devices, ensuring hygienic, frictionless, and secure transactions.

No more password hassles
Managing multiple passwords can be cumbersome and poses security risks, especially if users reuse weak passwords. Biometric authentication removes this hassle by allowing users to access multiple financial services using their unique biological traits, eliminating the need for complex passwords.
