Banks open today on Sunday: Check if all banks are open or closed today ahead of strike

Most bank customers may come across only a few occasions in their life when they may find a bank open on Sunday. They will find public sector and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) opened today (Sunday, September 27, 2026) as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had asked them to operate ahead of the proposed three-day bank strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026.

The RBI had approved the opening of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on September 27. The arrangement is intended to give customers an additional day to complete essential banking work before the strike.

Are all banks open on Sunday, September 27?

Public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks will stay open on Sunday as per the RBI’s instructions. Since private banks are not participating in the strike, they are most likely to stay closed today.


However, private bank customers need to check with their bank branch or wait for its update to know about today's holiday status.

Why are public sector banks opening on Sunday?

The decision has been taken because the proposed bank strike will run for three consecutive days from September 28 to September 30. Saturday was an off and had Sunday been also an off, banks would have been closed for five days.

Keeping branches open on September 27 has provided customers with an opportunity to complete transactions that require a branch visit.

Bank officers' association raises objection

The decision to make September 27 a working day has not been received well by all bank employee organisations.

In a statement dated September 23, the All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA) advised its members not to report for duty on Sunday, September 27. The association has maintained that the day is a holiday under the Industrial Disputes Act.

The AIBOA has also said that its members will observe the proposed stay-out strike from September 28 to September 30.
