Banks will be closed in some states today on February 20 to commemorate their Statehood Day. This day marks the formation of new states and their official recognition in the Indian Union. As a result, government offices, banks, and other institutions remain closed in these regions.

Why is February 20 a bank holiday?

One of the key states that celebrates its Statehood Day on February 20 is Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
In states where this holiday is observed, all scheduled commercial banks, cooperative banks, and regional rural banks will remain closed under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, as per the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Which states observe a bank holiday on February 20?

Arunachal Pradesh Statehood Day
Arunachal Pradesh became a full-fledged state on February 20, 1987, after being a Union Territory since 1972. It was earlier part of the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) before being restructured as an independent state.

Mizoram Statehood Day
In addition, Mizoram, a Union Territory since 1972, became a full state on February 20, 1987.
