What is Basava Jayanti?

Basava Jayanti is a holiday traditionally observed by the Indian state of Karnataka. It marks the birthday of Basavanna, a 12th-century poet-philosopher and the founding saint of the Lingayat tradition.

Basavanna believed in a society free of the caste system, with equal opportunities for all. He founded the Anubhava Mantapa, an academy which included Lingayat mystics, saints and philosophers.

Akshaya Tritiya will be widely observed on April 19, 2026, with the Tritiya Tithi beginning at 10:49 AM on April 19 and ending at 7:27 AM on April 20.
