8th Pay Commission pension: How much could your monthly payout increase?
The 8th Pay Commission could change the pensions of central government retirees. Pensioners’ associations have also submitted recommendations seeking higher pension rates and better benefits. While the final decision is still awaited, here is how basic pensions ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹75,000 could change under three illustrative fitment factors: 2.0, 2.25 and 2.57.

8th Pay Commission: What pension increases are associations demanding?
Several employee and pensioner bodies have sought a pension equal to 67% of the last-drawn basic pay, instead of the current 50%. They have also demanded family pension of 50% of the last-drawn basic pay. Other demands include one-rank-one-pension (OROP) for civilian employees and a higher minimum pension.

OPS pension: How is your retirement payout calculated currently?
Under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the basic pension is 50% of the last-drawn basic pay or the average emoluments of the last 10 months, whichever is higher. Family pension is generally 30% of the last-drawn pay. These are the existing rates that pensioner associations want the 8th Pay Commission to reconsider.

₹1 lakh last-drawn salary: Pensioners want basic pension to rise from ₹50,000 to ₹67,000
Consider an employee retiring with a last-drawn basic pay of ₹1 lakh, assuming it is higher than the average emoluments of the last 10 months. Under current OPS rules, the basic pension would be ₹50,000. The associations want it increased to ₹67,000, or 67% of the last-drawn basic pay. This is a recommendation, not a confirmed change.

8th Pay Commission pension at 2.0 fitment factor: ₹25,000 could become ₹50,000
If the 8th Pay Commission decides on a fitment factor of 2.0, a basic pension of ₹25,000 could double to ₹50,000. A pensioner currently receiving ₹50,000 could get an estimated revised basic pension of ₹1 lakh. Here is how pensions across different amounts could change under this scenario.

2.25 fitment factor: Could ₹50,000 basic pension rise to ₹1,12,500?
At a hypothetical fitment factor of 2.25, a basic pension of ₹25,000 could increase to ₹56,250. For those receiving ₹50,000 currently, the estimated revised basic pension could be ₹1,12,500. A pension of ₹75,000 could potentially rise to ₹1,68,750. Here are the estimates across different pension amounts.
7/8
2.57 fitment factor: ₹75,000 pension could rise to ₹1,92,750
If the 8th Pay Commission adopts a fitment factor of 2.57, a basic pension of ₹25,000 could increase to ₹64,250. A pension of ₹50,000 could reach ₹1,28,500, while someone currently receiving ₹75,000 could get an estimated revised basic pension of ₹1,92,750.

8th Pay Commission pension hike: Will retirees actually get these amounts?
These figures are illustrative calculations, not confirmed pension revisions. The actual increase will depend on the fitment factor and pension-related recommendations the government accepts after the 8th Pay Commission submits its report. Pensioners should not treat any of these estimates as a guaranteed increase in their monthly payout.
