What is an OCI card?
An OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card allows an Indian citizen who holds a foreign passport, i.e. is currently a national of a foreign country, a multi-purpose, multi-entry lifelong visa to India. OCI cardholders can stay in India as long as they want, and do not have to apply for a visa if they wish to visit India. They can also get employed in India and buy properties, except for agricultural land in the country.

Who is eligible for an OCI card?
Per the OCI portal, any person:
who is a citizen of another country, but was a citizen of India at the time of, or at any time after 26.01.1950; or

who is a citizen of another country, but was eligible to become a citizen of India on 26.01.1950; or

who is a child or a grandchild, or a great-grandchild of such a citizen, is eligible for an OCI card.

Can OCI cardholders get an Aadhaar card?
Yes.OCI cardholders can enrol as Resident Foreign National for Aadhaar. As per UIDAI, all resident foreign nationals, which also includes OCI cardholders, who have resided in India for 182 days or more in 12 months immediately preceding the date of their enrolment application date are eligible for Aadhaar enrolment as resident foreigners.

What supporting documents are required for the enrolment of an OCI cardholder?
Along with other documents needed for Aadhaar registration and enrolment, OCI cardholders need to produce their valid OCI card, along with their passport of the country of which they are citizens. Along with this, OCI cardholders can also be asked to show any document on which they have their Indian address. This can include PAN Card/e-PAN Card, Driving License, etc.

What is the difference between an OCI cardholder and an NRI (Non-Resident Indian)?
NRIs are Indian nationals who hold an Indian passport and live outside India for work or study-related purposes. They are very much Indian citizens, just live abroad. On the other hand, OCI cardholders are foreign citizens who do not hold an Indian passport. They are not Indian citizens, but they have special rights to live, work, and own property in India.

No. Unlike Aadhaar validity for Indian citizens, which lasts a lifetime, Aadhaar validity for OCI cardholders only lasts 10 years. Hence, OCI cardholders will have to reapply for their Aadhaar card every 10 years, if needed.
