WB CM opens art gallery funded by Mitsubishi

West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee inaugurated a gallery at the Jorasanko campus of Rabindra Bharati University on Wednesday which was funded by the Mitsubishi Corporation (Private) Limited, a Japanese conglomerate.


KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee inaugurated a gallery at the Jorasanko campus of Rabindra Bharati University on Wednesday which was funded by the Mitsubishi Corporation (Private) Limited, a Japanese conglomerate.

Mitsubishi has given Rs 32 lakh to the RBU for setting up the gallery which contain more than hundred photographs of Rabindra Nath Tagore’s visits to Japan.

“Diplomatic relations between India and Japan has completed its 50 years in 2003 and it was Rabindra Nath Tagore who had played a major role in establishing the relations between the two countries,’ Mr Bhattacharjee said after inaugurating the gallery on Wednesday morning.

The gallery is opened at the first floor of the campus and the RBU authorities are not charging any fee from the visitors. “Any person wanted to visit the museum at the Jorasanko campus can visit the gallery. We are not charging extra from the visitors excepting Rs 10 which is being charged for visiting the museum,” an official of the RBU said.

The RBU registrar Santosh Kumar Ghorui said that they had initiated the process of setting up the gallery in 2003 and managed to complete the process only in last week of September.

“We took three year to open the gallery for the public because we had to consult a number of experts in the field of art and culture and architect and engineers who plan setting up of galleries,” Mr Ghorui added.
