THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Raids conducted in railway stations in Kerala on Monday revealed tax evasion to the tune of Rs 3.75 crore on transported goods, Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac said.
Issac told reporters that goods, mostly consumer items, worth crores of rupees were also seized.
The raids were conducted on goods stored in the platforms of various railway stations including Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kannur.
Issac said the government would hold talks with Railways authorities to find a way to avoid this kind of tax evasion. As per a preliminary estimate, goods worth Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 3,000 crore were being transported to Kerala annually through Railways evading tax, he said, adding these goods attract a VAT of 12.5 per cent.
Issac also sought the Railways cooperation in detecting tax evasion.
Railways should insist for correct names and addresses of both sellers and buyers to put an end to this irregularity, he said.
