NEW DELHI: Dreams die hard. The current global meltdown has arguably cast a shadow over the economy and one of the worst-hit sectors is real estate.

Struggling under depressed sentiments and falling prices during the last few months, the sector has seen a substantial erosion of value and wealth in the market mayhem, with most speculators running for cover. The impact is clearly visible in raising funds for projects and meeting deadlines.

So is euphoria out and panic in? Will prices continue to see a freefall? Will the demand pattern change? Are interest rates going to see a downward spiral? Will the liquidity crunch continue to trouble realty players?

Of course, there are myriad issues. And as many hurdles in the great Indian dream of owning a house, given the turmoil in financial markets and its contagion effect on the real estate sector.

In the backdrop of dwindling demand, shrinking sales and melting margins, The Economic Times, in association with Le Meridien, has on Thursday organised its first SundayET Real Estate Roundtable, bringing together on one platform developers, bankers and policy-makers, to brainstorm and look for clues on what lies ahead of property players and buyers.

Themed Is it the right time to invest in property, the roundtable will see eminent leaders, Mr T C Goyal, MD, DLF Group; Mr Shravan Gupta, vice-chairman & MD, Emaar-MGF; Mr Rohtas Goyal, CMD, Omaxe Group; Mr Sanjay Verma, MD, South East Asia, Cushman & Wakefield; Mr Raj Vikas Verma, executive director, National Housing Bank and Mr M Ramachandran, secretary, ministry of urban development, discuss and deliberate on the critical issues facing the real estate sector.
