Sotheby's London Impressionist & Modern Art summer sales series earns £127,557,000

Monet's 1908 view of Venice provided the high point of the week becoming the top selling work of the London summer season.

KOLKATA: On June 20, Sotheby's London Impressionist & Modern Art summer sales series concluded achieving a combined total of £127,557,000 (estimate £99.8-£140.8 million). Monet's 1908 view of Venice, Le Palais Contarini, provided the highpoint of the week, becoming the top selling work of the London summer season, when it sold in a tense four-way bidding battle for £19,682,500/ $30,828,700/€22,998,940.

Helena Newman, chairman of Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Department, Europe, commented in an email statement : ""Following last night's successful sale, today's further appealing offering of works from estate collections, together with a broader and a particularly high-calibre selection of Works on Paper, saw bidders drawn to each price level of the market, with extremely strong totals achieved throughout.""

James Mackie, head of Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale, commented: ""Responding to today's market demand for supreme Works on Paper, we were extremely pleased to have offered such a fine selection, comprising museum-quality works across our sales and also in a dedicated Works on Paper Sale. Our Day Sale results too show the enthusiastic response of buyers to the rare and exceptional, with two lots fetching sums over a million pounds, and collectors showing a particular appetite for great early and Classic Impressionist works.""
