NEW DELHI: From December, senior citizens will not have to visit zonal offices to pay property tax. Following on Delhi government’s footsteps, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday announced the plans to provide doorstep services for property tax exclusively for them.

Of the total tax net of 4.5 lakh property taxpayers, around 1.25 lakh are senior citizens.

SDMC standing committee chairman Shikha Rai stated that the scheme will be launched soon as the senior citizens have been facing difficulties in visiting zonal offices. “It will be appreciable to provide the doorstep service as it will help in enhanced tax collection. It is worthwhile to mention that during 2017-18, of 4,44,000 tax payers, 1,23,045 were in the age group of sixty and more,” said Rai.

The move will also help those who are not aware about the time frame and find it difficult in making payments. Under the concept, the employees will visit the residence and get the tax returns filled and accept payments both in cash or cheque by June 15 annually. The corporation will also launch a helpline number where people can call and fix appointments.
