S H Raza work tops Sotheby's sale, fetches Rs 2.47 crore

An oil work by legendary painter S H Raza from his Paris period has topped a Sotheby's auction here, going under the hammer for Rs 2.47 crore.

LONDON: An oil work by legendary painter S H Raza from his Paris period has topped a Sotheby's auction here, going under the hammer for Rs 2.47 crore.

The Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art sale on May 31, comprising 62 lots of works including the likes of M F Husain, Manjit Bawa and F N Souza, realised Rs 11.9 crore.

An untitled oil work by Bawa, signed in English, Urdu and Devanagari on the reverse, fetched Rs 1.15 crore, while two untitled paintings by Souza sold for Rs 89 lakh and Rs 81 lakh each.

A striking feature of the auction was that several works of prolific artists remained unsold. These included "Hungry God" by Subodh Gupta, "The Sixth Seal" by Husain and Raza's "Bindu."

Raza's "Rue des Fosses St Jaques," which had a pre-sale estimate of 300,000-500,000 pounds, represents an important early phase in his career where he abandons the confines of traditional watercolour and takes on oil, developing a unique idiom where space and colour seem to feed into one another.

The work is signed and dated "RAZA'57" in the upper right.
