Reliance General Insurance Co Ltd asked to pay woman over Rs 1.25L

RGIC has been ordered to fully reimburse a woman's claim of around Rs one lakh, incurred on repairing of her insured car after an accident.

NEW DELHI: Reliance General Insurance Co Ltd ( RGIC) has been ordered by a Delhi consumer forum to fully reimburse a woman's claim of around Rs one lakh, incurred on repairing of her insured car after an accident.

Besides asking RGIC to fully reimburse the expenses of Rs 96,265 to city resident Sangmitra Singh, the South Delhi District Consumer Forum also asked it to pay her Rs 30,000 as compensation for harassing her by not getting damages to her car properly assessed.

In her complaint, Sangmitra had said she had repeatedly requested to the insurance form's surveyor to properly assess the car's damages, but surveyor assessed the damage to a mere Rs 18,000, without taking into account the damages in its engine.

She said as per the surveyor's assessment, she was paid a mere reimbursement of Rs 18,000 while she ended up spending Rs 96,265 in getting her car repaired.

"In our view, though complainant requested the surveyor two-three times to assess internal damage, the company's surveyor did not allow this," the consumer forum said.

"The company has failed to explain any reasons for this conduct of its surveyor. This amounts to serious deficiency in the service of company, leading to harassment," the forum, headed by President C K Chaturvedi, said.

"The complainant is clearly entitled to the balance amount of Rs 77,391 which it (the company) denied to complainant. The company is directed to pay this amount with interest at the rate of 9 per cent from date of payment of Rs 18,874 earlier, till repayment," the forum said.
