Assuring action against private developers involved in illegal constructions, Maha govt said it is planning to introduce new law to curb such activities.

MUMBAI: Assuring action against private developers involved in illegal constructions, the Maharashtra government today said it is planning to introduce new law to curb such activities.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan gave the assurance in the Legislative Assembly while intervening in a discussion during a calling attention notice on spurt in illegal constructions in Mira-Bhayander town in the neighbouring Thane district.

There are laws like Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act and Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act which provide for jail term in such cases, Chavan said.

"We are examining whether a new law can be introduced or amendments with more stringent provisions be made in the existing laws to curb such activities," he said.

Pratap Sarnaik (Shiv Sena) said cases have been filed against 135 developers for undertaking construction without obtaining occupation certificate (OC) in Mira Bhayander.

Eknath Shinde (Shiv Sena) lamented at the unplanned growth of Thane.
