HYDERABAD: The new Chairman of the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA) on Friday said protecting the interests of the consumers by ensuring an honest transaction with the insurance firms would be a top priority for him.

"We will be spending more time and paying more attention to matters relating to customer grievances to ensure that purchasers of insurance policy of various types are given a fair deal and an honest transaction between the providers of insurance cover and those taking advantage of it," J Harinarayana told a TV news channel here.

Buyers of insurance products are important stakeholders in the sector and the endeavour of the insurance authority would be to ensure that their rights and interests were duly taken care of, he said.

Harinarayana said his predecessors, K Rangachary and C S Rao, have built the IRDA on firm foundations and he would strive "to take their ideas further to build on the very strong foundation they have laid".

Harinarayana, a senior bureaucrat, recently retired as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh.
