Top artists across the board have created unique works revolving around trees, which fetch impressive prices in the market.

KOLKATA: Nature has always been a major subject in art. And, in this genre, trees have been a striking theme. Top artists across the board have created unique works revolving around trees. These include names like FN Souza, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Jogen Chowdhury, Prakash Karmakar, Nikhil Biswas and Bengal School artists led by the Tagores. Even a small-sized Souza tree work could sell for Rs 20 lakh.

Trees have been a significant theme for artists because they always are an integral part of human life. This element has allowed tremendous space for thought and creativity. Artists can draw blood from the colours, shapes and texture of trees. Bengal School artists like Rabindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose, to mention some, have turned out exquisite works with trees as the prime motif, an art market source told ET. While Rabindranath has churned out line drawings in this area, Gaganendranath is known for paintings of woodlands, the source added.

According to the source, the renowned Bikash Bhattacharjee was famous for paintings reflecting the tree in varied interpretations. In one, we find a nude woman embracing a tree. Another work shows a boy in Simla whose body looks like a tree. Yet another painting by Bikash sees a girl getting married to a tree, driving home an age-old Hindu ritual.

Prakash Karmakar, at the same time, has come up with large paintings depicting trees in different forms. Nikhil Biswas has also created a series of paintings hovering around trees. Paritosh Sen is also known for his drawings in this category.

The inimitable FN Souza has shown trees as humans in embrace. Top-notch artist Jogen Chowdhury has also executed drawings and paintings of plants in a sensual manner. In all likelihood, FN Souza and Kartick Chandra Pyne would probably lead the way in their use of trees as a form, the source said.

These paintings command very healthy demand. In fact, buyers could be drawn to them more than landscapes as the latter may sometimes be somewhat commonplace. A small-sized Souza watercolour of a tree could be priced at about Rs 20 lakh. At the same time, a Rabindranath Tagores black and white may be placed at Rs 15 lakh, while a coloured work could figure at Rs 20 lakh. Gaganendranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose pencil or inks are in the region of Rs 10 lakh. In the same breath, a 5 feet by 4 feet Prakash Karmakar oil would go for Rs 8 lakh, a Gopal Ghose pastel Rs 1.5 lakh, while a Nikhil Biswas can be picked up for Rs 2 lakh, the source observed.
