With Durga Puja being celebrated around the country, it might be interesting to know that the painting ‘Mahisasura’ of Tyeb Mehta reigns the price charts.

This painting made in 1997 fetched Rs 6.9 crore in 2005 auctions — the highest price ever paid for Indian art. According to a legend, king of asuras, Mahisasura, defeats Indra to become the lord of heaven.

Then, Goddess Durga created by the light of three gods — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — assumes her powerful form to slay the buffalo-demon Mahisasura. After his slaying, devas come back to power.

Durga is, therefore, also known as 'Mahisasuramardini'. These works are part of the 'Mahisasura' series that Tyeb Mehta painted in the 1990s
