Maharashtra minting moolah via Dharavi

The state has mopped over Rs 1 crore by selling expression of interest forms.

MUMBAI: Even before the Rs 10,000 crore worth redevelopment of Asia’s largest slum conglomerate, Dharavi, takes off, the state has made over Rs 1 crore merely from the sale of expression of interest (EOI) forms.

The slum rehabilitation authority (SRA), the nodal agency for overseeing the ambitious project, sold over 100 forms and mopped over Rs 1 crore by way of charging Rs 1 lakh per form, highly placed sources in the housing department said.

The sale of forms began on June 1 and ended on June 30. The SRA sold over 100 forms in this period, clearly indicating the interest of developers in Dharavi. Though it was believed that application charges would deter non-serious developers from bidding the project, the interest evinced by them has been heartening for the state mandarins.

However, a housing department official , sought to play down the generation of over Rs 1 crore by mere selling of EOI forms. In view of the high project cost, the SRA expected more developers to come forward and participate in the process, he says.

He also pointed out that the authority had spent nearly Rs 10 lakh on advertisement of the project itself. The global tenders for the project were published in various newspapers across the world, including Wall Street Journal and Financial Times.

Financial bidding will begin in August and the process is expected to be completed in September.
