LIC premium at Rs 7 lakh cr

JALPAIGURI: The premium collected by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) at present is Rs 7 lakh crore, All India LIC Employees Association secretary K Venugopal said in Jalpaiguri on Thursday.

The number of policies of the country’s premier state insurance company has increased from 57 lakh in 1957 to 19 crore in ’06, Mr Venugopal said while addressing the 50th AGM of All India Insurance Employees Association’s (AIIEA) Jalpaiguri division here.

The AIIEA demanded immediate recruitment for 17,000 vacant posts in the insurance sector and claimed that the number of employees had come down to 81,000 from 97,000.

Mr Venugopal claimed that LIC is investing the highest amount among insurance companies in the infrastructure development of the country.
