The Kerala Government has targeted to collect Rs 11,200 crore as sales tax collection during 2007-08, a 51 per cent increase over Rs 8,600 crore collected in 2006-07.

KOCHI: The Kerala Government has targeted to collect Rs 11,200 crore as sales tax collection during 2007-08, a 51 per cent increase over Rs 8,600 crore collected in 2006-07.
About 65 per cent of the targeted sales tax is expected to be collected from Ernakulam district alone, State Finance Minister Thomas Issac said on Tuesday.
Pointing out that large-scale evasion had come to the government's notice, he said efforts are being made to have stringent checkings at checkposts, ports and railway stations to ensure that there was no evasion. Squad would be formed for this, he added.
Large-scale sales tax evasion on goods transported through railways has been brought to the government's attention. Checking would also be made stringent at ports as goods like granite and marbles are transported by ships from Mumbai and Gujarat.
In all checkposts, weight bridges would be constructed and a checkpost plaza would be set up at Palakaad-Walayar checkpost.
The minister said tax evasion by jewellers has also been found. After the introduction of compounding tax at four per cent, about Rs 100 crore had been collected from jewellers, he said.
Issac said a provision has been made to collect 0.5 per cent tax on bunkering oil from April this year.
