Indirect tax collection target to be met: FM

Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that the government is confident of meeting the target of indirect tax collections for this financial year.

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday said the government is confident of meeting the target of indirect tax collections for this financial year.

The government has set a target of collecting about Rs 2,78,013 crore through indirect taxes such as customs and excise duties in 2007-08.

Chidambaram told reporters today revenue from customs duty grew 20 per cent in the first quarter this fiscal, while that from excise duty rose 6.8 per cent. Service tax collections grew over 31 per cent, he said.
