Indian artwork to come up for auction at Christie's

A host of artworks from India, including an 18th century Mughal era silver tray and a 19th century Agra wool carpet, will be among the various articles that leading art house Christie's will showcase at a three-day auction here.

LONDON: A host of artworks from India, including an 18th century Mughal era silver tray and a 19th century Agra wool carpet, will be among the various articles that leading art house Christie's will showcase at a three-day auction here.

Titled 'Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds', the first of the series, will have over 250 artworks going under the hammer on October 6.

Some of the articles which will come up for auction are a 17th century navigation chart of the Mediterranean (estimated: 3,00,000-4,00,000 pounds), a 13th century Qur'an from Amol (Iran) (estimated: 2,00,000-3,00,00 pounds).

Other works which will feature include ceramics, arms, metalworks, textiles, jewelry, and miniatures, with an estimated range from 1,500-4,00,00 pounds.

Next in the offing are over 200 articles from the 'Oriental and European Rugs and Carpets' series.

A late 19th century Indian Agra wool carpet (estimated: 50,000-70,000 pounds) will be the centre of attraction in Christie's London of this auction on October 8.

Similarly, 'Indian and Islamic works of Arts and Textiles' will have over 600 lots comprising of two private collections, a Christie's press release said.

The sale on October 9 will see some stunning Indian miniatures and paintings which include a late 18th century portrait of Raja Prakash Chand of Guler smoking a hookah (estimated: 1,500-2,500 pounds).
