India signs DTAA with Syria
India has signed a revised double taxation avoidance agreement (DTAA) with the government of the Syrian Arab Republic for the avoidance of double taxation.
The revised pact will cover all taxes imposed on total income or on elements of income, including taxes on gains from alienation of movable or immovable property, taxes on the total amounts of wages or salaries paid by enterprises. The DTAA provides that business profits may be taxed in the source state if the activities of an enterprise constitute a permanent establishment in the source state.
Govt establishes offshore safety regime in oil & gas sector
Ministry of petroleum and natural gas has decided to notify Petroleum & Natural Gas (Safety in Offshore Operations ) Rules, 2008, for regulation of safety in offshore oil & gas exploration, exploitation, production / drilling and related matters. These rules will be applicable to all public sector undertakings , private / joint ventures companies operating in territorial waters, contiguous zone, continental shelf and exclusive economic zone of India in offshore upstream oil & gas sector.
These rules would benefit the industry to enhance safety levels, bring uniformity in safety standards across all companies, minimize production loss / accidents and optimise use of precious oil & gas resources of the country. The government has designated Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD), a premier technical arm of the ministry , as competent authority to exercise the powers under the rules. It will develop HSE standards, conduct safety audits, carry out investigations to meet the requirements of these rules.
Dr Hariharan honoured
In recognition of his outstanding contribution towards maritime education and training in India, Dr KV Hariharan has been bestowed with Lifetime Achievement Award, by Global Maritime Education and Training Association . By conferring the award on the Mumbai-based maritime academician and historian, the international body representing educational and training institutions over 30 countries has taken note of Dr Hariharan's dedicated service for more than 3 decades.
Hamburg S��d opens Asia to India/ Pakistan service
Starting July 11, 2008 Hamburg S��d is launching a new service between Asia / Far East and India / Pakistan with simultaneous sailings from Port Kelang and Shanghai. The new, weekly fixed-day service comprises two slings and will intend to provide fast and reliable direct connections between PR China / Hong Kong / Taiwan and India subcontinent.
At the same time, this means that, with the recently restructured EPIC service (Northern Europe - Mediterranean Region, Middle East, India / Pakistan), the shipping group's links from and to India are being further expanded. In addition, this new service also ensures good onward connections to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific coast of South America.
