I-T mulling engaging Dhoni to better tax collection

The income tax (I-T) department in Jharkhand is working on a plan to appoint Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador.

RANCHI: The income tax (I-T) department in Jharkhand is working on a plan to appoint Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador.

The decision to engage Dhoni was taken by the department not only be-cause of his mass appeal but also because he was the highest tax payer in Jharkhand in the last financial year.

Earlier, Dhoni has campaigned for the state forest and environment department, human resource development department and cleft lip operation among children from weaker section of the society. His latest campaign by was for the forest department when he was in Ranchi after winning the IPL T-20 series.

Sources in the I-T department said last year the Indian skipper was the highest individual tax payer in the state. "Dhoni was also among the list of top tax payers among the sportspersons in the country just after Sachin Tendulkar," said a source adding that the tax paid by him was around Rs 1 crore.

"Since he has a mass appeal and there is craze among people in Jharkhand (for him), the department thought of taking the advantage of his cha-risma," said the source. I-T commissioner Bir Birsa Ekka confirmed that the department was try-ing to engage the India skipper because of his mass appeal to improve tax collection.

"I will not be able to give details but we hope that tax collection will definitely improve if Dhoni is associated with our cam-paign to attract maximum number of individual tax payers," said Ekka.

"We have also approached Dhoni through some informal channels and are waiting for his response before initiating the formal process of appointing him as the brand ambassador for the department," said Ekka adding that the main target of the campaign would be the individual tax payers.
