How big a luxury home can $1 million buy?

Based on data crunched by Knight Frank, it appears the number of square feet you can own can vary wildly from city to city.

You have got a million dollars to spare and want to buy a luxury roof over your head. Based on data crunched by Knight Frank, it appears the number of square feet you can own can vary wildly from city to city.

A million dollar home of your own
  • Cape Town: 1,690 sq ft
  • Tokyo: 818 sq ft
  • Shanghai: 581 sq ft
  • Sydney: 516 sq ft
  • Dubai: 1,485 sq ft
  • Sao Paulo: 1,862 sq ft
  • Mumbai: 990 sq ft
  • Singapore: 419 sq ft
  • London: 301 sq ft
  • Monaco: 172 sq ft
Even if you have $1 million (Rs 6.5 crore) to spend on property, you might not feel as rich in some parts of the world, as compared to others. In Monaco, the tiny city-state of casinos and car racing, $1 million will get you just 172 square feet of upscale living space. The same amount can buy you a sprawling 1,862 square feet of space in Sao Paulo.
