Halt Rs 100 cr investment on octroi:Merchant asso

Bombay Sugar Merchant's Association asked Maharashtra CM to put a halt on BMC's proposed Rs 100-crore investment on upgradation of octroi check posts .

MUMBAI: Seeking to prevent wastage of exchequer's money, Bombay Sugar Merchant's Association on Monday asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to put a halt on BMC's proposed Rs 100-crore investment on upgradation of octroi check posts as the state has committed to do away with the levy.

In the letter, BSMA pointed out that the Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation (BMC) would spend Rs 100 crore on computerisation of octroi check posts and installation of scanners over the next three months.

"The idea behind this expenditure could be to dissuade the government from taking a decision on octroi abolition or waste Rs 100 crore worth of public money," the association has said in the letter.

The association has brought Chief Minister's attention to BMC's proposal to offer plastic cards to corporates to enable them pay octroi besides roping in 11 banks to collect the levy.

The association asked the CM to order BMC against spending any money on computerisation or entering into any agreement with corporates or banks till the government takes final decision on the levy of octroi.
