Govt considering proposal to subsidise interest of education loans
The government is considering a proposal to subsidise the interest component on loans given to students for higher professional courses during moratorium period.
"A proposal to introduce a scheme for providing interest subsidy during the moratorium period on the education loans taken by students having lower than a specific parental income, for pursuing professional education in India under the revised Model Educational Loan Scheme formulated by the Indian Banks' Association, is under consideration of the government," Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said replying a question.
A provision of Rs 4,000 crore has been made in the 11th plan for this proposed scheme, she said.
Replying to another question Purandeswari said the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched many schemes.
A six month certificate programme on HIV/AIDS and Family Education (CAFE) was introduced in 2002, she said.
The Minister said a diploma programme on HIV/AIDS and Family Education (DAFE) was introduced from the academic session 2003 while the course on social work with compulsory courses on HIV/AIDS and Family Education and Substance Abuse was introduced in academic year 2004.
