Get your I-T returns in 30 days
If the I-T department’s plans unfold well, you may begin receiving your returns in a month’s time for taxes filed for financial year 2011-12.
The centralized processing centre (CPC) that was implemented in 2009 has been successfully processing 1.3 lakh returns everyday. E-governance has helped a bunch of 30 employees to clear 30% of the department’s burden, with accurate and extensive testing of over 2,000 business rules in every application received.
In fact, the Centre had recently lauded CPC with an award for mass processing of returns without any interface with taxpayers in a jurisdiction-free manner.
2 more centres likely
In order to process conventional paper returns in a centralized manner, the I-T department is in the process of setting up two more regional processing centres at Pune and Manesarin in Haryana.
IVRS to check status
The CPC will soon be equipped with a 24-hour working cell on an interactive voice response system (IVRS). “The process is likely to begin in March. Taxpayers can contact us on the toll-free number for grievance redressal. Calls will be answered in English, Hindi and Kannada,” said Sanjai Kumar Verma, I-T commissioner. At present, the call centre operates from 9am to 8pm on tollfree number 1800-425-2229.
More raids in the offing
Of the over 120 crore people in the country, only 3.5 crore are filing their I-T returns. About 55% of the population is into agriculture, which doesn’t come under the tax net. The rest of them are evading taxes. The success of the CPC model is helping us crack down on evaders. There are no backlogs now, and we can divert our manpower to core enforcement activities like scrutiny, assessment, research and I-T raids.
