For property tax recovery, Pune Municipal Corporation forms a special team

PUNE: The property tax department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has formed a special team for tax recovery. As many as 125 people have been recruited as special tax inspectors for this drive, stated a press release issued by PMC. As per the PMC’s statement five music bands have been added in the drives. Two senior tax recovery officers will coordinate actions across the city along with other staff. These officials have been termed as assistant chiefs of tax department. Apart from them even 12 regional inspectors will be part of the team.

“The administration has been carrying out drives for the recovery. A special scheme for the tax defaulters has been launched. Discount on the penalty will be given under this scheme for those who will pay the dues at one go,” said PMC official. Under the scheme, the administration has offered defaulters 75 per cent discount on the penalty if paid before November 15. Those owners, who will pay the defaulted amount of tax between November 16 and before December 31, will get 50 % discount on the penalty.

Property tax is a levy issued by the government on a person's real or personal property. The property is assessed to give it a value and, then, that value is taxed. The amount of tax owed is determined by multiplying the fair market value of the property by the current tax rate. The property tax department plans to use the geographical information system (GIS) to register properties in the city. The system is expected to be functional by November.
