Akhila Srinivasan, the charismatic Managing Director of Shriram Life Insurance, believes in the therapeutic power of Carnatic music and yoga. In a freewheeling chat with Viren Naidu, she describes how she consciously makes time for her hobbies.

Theory

I dislike when people associate the term, ‘burdened with responsibilities’ with senior executives. Taking up responsibility of any kind is a privilege and a challenge. One gets an opportunity to exercise one’s skills and talents to the maximum extent. Therefore, it is never a burden. Every person should have hobbies and pursue them. A hobby helps to give shape to one’s creative instincts and provides relaxation and enjoyment.

Passion

I have been learning Carnatic music since I was 10 years of age. I have my music classes twice a week and I wouldn’t miss them for anything in the world. For me, music is a spiritually elevating experience. It adds sensitivity and finesse to one’s character. At the emotional and psychological level, it is a very soothing experience.

Obligations

I do find time to meet all my social obligations. I try and attend all the functions to which I am invited. Attending to household chores is therapeutic and to manage these, time management is essential. My other hobbies include reading and spending quality time with friends. My favourite books are ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle and Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography - ‘The Story of My Experiments with Truth’.

Satisfaction

I have been associated with the Art of Living for the last two years and I am now the State President for Tamil Nadu. I have attended their courses and I practice Sudarshan Kriya every day.
Practice of Sudarshan Kriya every day for 25-30 minutes releases toxins, activates every cell in the body and rejuvenates the system, as a result of which one’s psychological, emotional and physical well being is enhanced.

This results in increased productivity. Yoga has helped me to release vital energy that can be channelised into productive areas. It has made me a more focussed individual, besides being a rejuvenating experience.

Life

I believe in leading a wholesome life. When one manages time well and plays various roles with a duty-conscious bent of mind, one gets tremendous fulfillment. Various facets of life interest me and therefore, I find time to give my best shot to each of the roles I play, and to each interest that I pursue. I believe in the dictum ‘the busiest person finds time for everything’. Yoga, Art of Living and Carnatic music have certainly made me a more evolved person.
