MUMBAI: Brand ambassadors, celebrities, film makers, malls and mobile companies owe the Maharashtra Government Rs 13.32 crore towards stamp duty, the state assembly was informed today.
The defaulters include cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and some Bollywood personalities like Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and director Priyadarshan.
Replying to a query by Arun Gawli of Akhil Bharatiya Sena, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane gave this information in a written reply.
Notices and reminders have been issued to the defaulter companies and individuals and if they fail to respond, action would be initiated against them as per provisions of the Mumbai Stamp Act 1958, Rane said.
Bharti Airtel has challenged the notice seeking Rs 12.12 crore stamp duty in the High Court and the matter is sub-judice, he told the house.
The recovery of the remaining Rs 1.20 crore is awaited, the minister said.
The brand ambassadors who have not responded to the notice include Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, John Abraham, Saif Ali Khan, Juhi Chawla, Preity Zinta, Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Lara Datta, Mandira Bedi, Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza, Karisma Kapoor, Zaheer Khan and Malaika Arora.
Gangster-turned-politician Gawli had asked as to whether the state government had incurred a revenue loss of Rs 50 crore as a result of the defaulting parties not paying stamp duty on agreements.
