Committee shortlists four for IRDA top post
A committee, headed by finance secretary D Subba Rao, appointed for selecting the IRDA chief, has shortlisted four candidates for the job.
The committee will now interview the potential candidates early next month after which their recommendations will be considered by the appointments committee of the cabinet. A formal announcement relating to the appointment of the new chairman will be made by mid-May, before the current chairman of IRDA CS Rao completes his tenure, said officials.
Of the candidates, Mr Harinarayan is a 1970 batch IAS officer from the Andhra cadre. He took charge as chief secretary in August 2006 and served the Congress government-ruled state till the end of February this year.
He has also had stints with the Central government, with the last assignment there being that of secretary, water resources. Ms Ramachandran is a 1972 batch IAS officer, also from the Andhra Pradesh cadre. She has had stints at the Centre as additional secretary and financial advisor in the department of chemicals and petrochemicals.
CR Muralidharan, an officer from the Reserve Bank of India, is the senior-most member of IRDA. This time round, the government has broad-based the selection process which has led to technocrats also being short-listed.
Although there were a few applications from CEOs of insurance companies, none of them have been shortlisted for the interview. Both the life and non-life councils, which represent the insurance industry, were told to suggest names for the top job, but they have chosen not to, said sources.
