KOLKATA: Top auctioneer Christies is offering 140 lots of South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art during its mid-September sale in New York. The sale will put on tap major works from modern masters to cutting edge artists like Tyeb Mehta, MF Husain, J Swaminathan, Ram Kumar, Subodh Gupta, Riyas Komu and Rashid Rana among others. The sale sports an overall estimate of $12 million.

The highlights of the estimates include a 1979 Tyeb Mehta Untitled (Yellow Heads) assessed at $300,000-500,000. This painting is reminiscent of Mehtas series in which he divides the canvas with a prominent slanting line. MF Husains Ritual, valued in the band of $600,000-800,000, reflect in its own way the artists unique style which has grown out of Cubism, Expressionism and Abstraction.

The sale also features an important work by Ram Kumar, who was influenced by names like Modigliani and Leger. The Untitled work, created in 1961, is estimated in the range of $500,000-700,000. J Swaminathan, who was known to draw inspiration from folk and tribal art, miniatures and Indian mythology, is finding in the sale an Untitled work from his Bird and Mountain Series which is estimated at $300,000-500,000.

At the same time, Rameshwar Brootas The Same Old Story II, a 1979 oil on canvas, is pegged in the range of $150,000-200,000. In step, a Manjit Bawa Untitled, another oil, painted in 1992 is placed in the band of $150,000-200,000.

Among the contemporary art offerings, Subodh Gupta appears to be leading the way with two major works. Guptas Miter, revolving around stainless steel and stainless steel utensils, boasts of an estimate of $600,000-800,000. This work is number three in an edition of three. In the same breath, Guptas oil on canvas, Steal 2, is priced at $800,000-1,000,000.

Another contemporary lot includes Riyas Komus Designated March of a Petro-Angel (or Desert March), an oil on canvas which is estimated $60,000-80,000.
