Christie's sale of Asian 20th Century & Contemporary Art fetches $53 mn

KOLKATA: On Saturday, May 25, 2013, Christie's Evening Sale of Asian 20th Century & Contemporary Art in Hong Kong realised HK$414,950,000 (US$53,736,025), and sold in excess of 90% by lot and 91% by value. Four world auction records were established: Nudes on Horseback by American-Chinese artist Yun Gee ( Zhu Yuanzhi) sold for HK$11,430,000 (US$ 1,480,185), Still Life with Tropical Fruits by Singaporean artist Georgette Chen sold for HK$5,070,000 (US$656,565), La marchande de riz (The Rice Seller) by Vietnamese artist Nguyen Phan Chanh sold for HK$3,030,000 (US$392,385), and PixCell-Coyote#3 by Japanese artist Kohei Nawa sold for HK$2,790,000 (US$361,305).

Eric Chang, international director of Asian 20th Century & Contemporary Art, said, "The breadth and depth of the market was felt in the energetic saleroom, across 20th Century and cutting-edge Asian Contemporary art. We witnessed continued cross-cultural buying throughout the evening and saw increasing attention paid to Southeast Asian Art. Since last season, we have seen this market continue to grow in stature and excite collectors from every corner of the world and from other collecting areas. This is driving the market to new levels."
