Chennai Large Taxpayer Unit to be operational in December

Government on Thursday said it will make operational a Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU), a point where large taxpayers submit taxes and get assistance on related issues, in Chennai in December.

NEW DELHI: Government on Thursday said it will make operational a Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU), a point where large taxpayers submit taxes and get assistance on related issues, in Chennai in December.

Already 36 potential large taxpayers have expressed their willingness to join the Chennai LTU, an official release said here.

Similar units would be set up in a phased manner in other metro cities, it said.

Meanwhile, the first LTU in Bangalore has completed one year on October 3.

The LTU began with 28 large taxpayers, which during the year grew to 45, comprising 350 central excise and service tax registrants and 509 Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number, it said.

The service delivery standards set by LTU Bangalore has resulted in reduction of compliance costs of large taxpayers, and addressed their tax related concerns in a fair and transparent manner, it added.

Indirect tax collections of the unit have shown a healthy growth, it said, adding that during the first half of current financial year, central excise collections through LTU grew by 45 per cent and service tax collections grew by 21 per cent.
