KOLKATA : Art is created both for private and public spaces. In fact, historically, India is fam ous for its sculptural art forms in public places like temples. Some of the oldest and best form of art is harboured in these temples. Internationally, too, the cream of art is visible in public spaces. Art for private spaces emerged with collectors entering the art market and the two forms of art are characteristically different.

Though there are no straitjacket parameters, art churned out for private places could be more serious in content. Of course, it is also true that exquisite art, especially sculptures, is visible in modern urban centres both in abroad and in India.

“Small format paintings started in the palaces and gradually percolated to the general public. This expanded to portraits, sensual and religious art which made their way from public to private spaces. Miniature paintings also evolved and adorned the chambers of royalty. Now, miniatures are being bought by collectors from auctions to be mounted in the interiors of their homes. With the contemporisation of the art market, sculptures and paintings have got position in hotels and offices,” an art market source told ET.
