A cross-section of artists in the contemporary group is dabbling in a proactive manner in the sphere of art in non-traditional media. In the West, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol are known to have painted on unconventional media.
���As we are all aware, paintings have crystallised on paper, canvas and even board. But, paintings, which in time have entered other media genres, have seen a marriage with textiles and ceramics. Of course, Thangka paintings have been done on silk for centuries.
Today, Sunil Das has created paintings for T-shirts. While they have been used in the original form sometimes, the T-shirts have also carried printed impressions of Das��� actual artwork. The well-known Jogen Chowdhury is learnt to have churned out paintings on clay plates which command a tidy price,��� an art market source told ET.

The celebrated Mr Husain has painted on newspaper sheets and even in the interiors of a roadside restaurant in Kolkata. In step, Mr Souza has lent his brush to fashioning paintings on magazine covers.
Artists are also painting on photographic paper and on printed photographs. Paintings are also being digitally generated and printed on canvas and paper. These works are being traded in the market.
���This trend is gathering pace because artists are generally experimental and like try to out different media. This form of art sports its own uniqueness. Besides, a range of media allows an artist to project an idea in the way that it has been visualised cerebrally,��� the source said.
���Art in other media took off in a big way in the West and then spread to other countries like India. In recent times, the momentum in a market which perceives art to be adding value to a range of objects and material. This fad is also catching on in an atmosphere where art awareness has grown manifold,��� the source said.
As things stand, the combination of art and other media has developed more in larger art hubs like Delhi and Mumbai which are probably more open to new age experimentations. But, it���s only a matter of time before other centres catch up more in this trendy sphere.
