A scientist in his will gifts his Sainik Farms property to Supreme Court

A scientist who was allegedly being harassed by his family over property has gifted his south Delhi property to the Supreme Court.

NEW DELHI: A scientist who was allegedly being harassed by his family over property has gifted his south Delhi property to the Supreme Court. Balram Nath Nigam has handed over 1 acre of land in Sainik Farms to the court in his will. The will does not specify why the property was being gifted to the court.

Justice Manmohan Singh of Delhi High Court last week began proceedings on the plea of Nigam's relatives and ordered sealing of the will. The court also issued notice to the SC registrar and to Nigam's wife and daughters, who continue to live on the property. According to the petitioners' counsel, Nigam had strained relations with his wife and daughters.

Appearing for Shailesh Nigam, nephew of the deceased, his lawyer Prashant Mehndiratta alleged that Balram's wife and daughters physically abused him with an eye on grabbing the prime property, forcing him to escape from his own house and spend the twilight of his life in an old age home in Ghaziabad. It was only after his death that the will was discovered by his relatives from his personal documents, the petition states.

Mehndiratta argued that Balram spent the last days of his life in great pain and sorrow and urged the court to respect the old man's wishes by giving effect to his will. He said Balram purchased the property in 1979. He later sold off a part of it while keeping the remainder for his house and for constructing another building adjacent to it.

According to the petitioners, their uncle had spoken to his brother and sister about the ill-treatment he received from his wife and daughters. He also allegedly told his siblings that he was once whisked away to a secret location in Faridabad by his wife, daughters and sons-in-law where he was forced to sign documents he suspected were related to the Sainik Farms property. Shaken by the experience, Balram allegedly left his house in 2009. The old age home he moved into was owned by a former colleague who was his subordinate in the organization.
