100-year old sets example by paying regular tax

For 100-year old F D Engineer, paying taxes honestly is no big deal. It’s just another task that has to be accomplished in time.

NEW DELHI: He could be the poster boy of the income-tax department. But for 100-year old F D Engineer, paying taxes honestly is no big deal. It’s just another task that has to be accomplished in time.

“Kya bari baat hai, tax to dena hi hota hai,” (What’s the big deal, tax has to be paid) was his immediate response when he was appreciated and congratulated by finance minister P Chidambaram for filing his return and paying tax, his daughter Zuri Mody, with whom he is presently living in Pune, told ET.

Mr Engineer, whose gesture is bound to inspire quite a few to file their returns on time, retired some time ago after running a successful business in Secundrabad. Prior to starting his business, he worked as a vice-principal in an engineering college in Surat and some private companies. He filed his income-tax returns on July 31, 2007, paying taxes on his earnings from the sale of shares he held in Nestle and Ingersoll-Rand.

He was meted with a well deserved treatment by the income-tax department, which processed his returns out of turn and handed over the intimation to his authorised representative.
