Silver jewellery hallmarking: Check HUID and purity before buying
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) introduced hallmarking for silver jewellery on a voluntary basis in October 2005. Under the scheme, jewellers can obtain a certificate of registration under IS 2112 to sell hallmarked silver jewellery. The BIS has since updated the hallmarking standard by introducing IS 2112:2025, which replaces the earlier IS 2112:2014.
It incorporates the HUID hallmarking of silver jewellery/artefacts, which will also improve traceability and is more like the hallmarking system for gold.
Under the revision, the consumer will be able to identify the type of article, jeweller registration No., etc., of silver jewellery/articles hallmarked on or after September 1, 2025, through the BIS Care app.
