Largecaps slip, smaller stocks shine bright
Here's the full scorecard for August: Nifty 50 down 1.24%, Nifty Next 50 up just 0.15%, Nifty 500 nearly flat at -0.04%. But zoom into smaller companies and the mood flips completely -Midcap 150 up 1.72%, Smallcap 250 up 2.52%, and Microcap 250 leading with a 5.41% jump. The message is clear: money is chasing smaller, riskier bets.

Sector winners: Defence stocks fire up, FMCG takes a hit
Seven out of ten sectors ended August in the green. Defence topped the charts with a 4.15% gain, followed by Metal at 3.73% and IT at 1.57%. Banks added 1.33%, Healthcare rose 1.11%, while Auto and Realty saw modest gains. The big loser? FMCG crashed 6.30%, with Energy also sliding 2.01% - showing investors rotating away from defensive, steady-Eddy stocks.

Momentum stocks roar ahead while safety trades lag
Investors chasing momentum were richly rewarded, that factor index jumped 4.97% in August, the best performer by far. Meanwhile, "safe" strategies struggled: Low Volatility dropped 2.77% and Enhanced Value fell 1.63%. Even Quality dipped slightly by 0.83%. Adding to the broader picture, the Nifty 500's flat performance masked strength in Industrials, Consumer Discretionary and Healthcare, offset by weakness in FMCG, Utilities and Telecom.

Global markets: Wall Street rallies, gold goes berserk
US markets had a strong August; the Nasdaq 100 jumped 4.18%, the S&P 500 gained 2.62%, and the Dow rose 1.34%. Over the past year, Nasdaq 100 is up an incredible 25.80%. Emerging markets impressed too, led by South Africa's 11% surge, while Taiwan and Korea also posted solid gains. But the real headline-stealer was gold, which skyrocketed 13.32% to $4,562 an ounce; a sign investors are hedging their bets globally.

Bitcoin and Ethereum roar back in August
Crypto had a blockbuster month. Ethereum surged 31.02% and Bitcoin climbed 22.18%, though both remain down over the past year. Crude oil edged up 1.29% to $85.76 a barrel, while the Indian rupee stayed largely stable against the dollar, moving just -0.24%. It's a month where risk assets across the board, from smallcaps to crypto, found fresh buying interest.

Inflation ticks up in India as foreign investors stay cautious
India's CPI inflation rose slightly to 4.45%, with the RBI holding rates steady at 5.25% and the 10-year yield inching up to 6.95%. Foreign investors (FIIs) put in ₹25,492 crore, dwarfed by domestic institutional investors (DIIs), who poured in ₹62,125 crore into equities, though DIIs pulled ₹53,749 crore out of debt. Meanwhile in the US, inflation cooled to 3.40% as the Fed held rates at 3.75%, setting the stage for what comes next in global markets.
