Telecom operators are typically measured by subscribers, spectrum and network reach. Jio Platforms is adding another metric to the conversation: patents.

The company has entered the global top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) ranking of international patent filers under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), as FinTech BizNews reported1. According to the report, Jio Platforms moved up 320 places to make the list, a sharp climb in a ranking that tracks international patent applications.

An overseas-heavy IP portfolio
According to company figures cited by FinTech BizNews1, Jio Platforms had filed 7,220 patents cumulatively as of March 31, 2026. Of these, 2,393 were filed in India and 4,424 in foreign jurisdictions, which means close to two-thirds of the portfolio has been filed outside the home market. As per the company, 1,009 patents have been granted so far.

For a telecom operator, the overseas skew of these filings stands out. According to the company, the portfolio spans 5G, early 6G work, satellite communications and AI-native networks, areas that sit at the core of next-generation telecom infrastructure.

Scale, stack and AI services
Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani has spoken about this push on more than one occasion. At the India Mobile Congress (IMC) in October 2026, he said Jio had already begun filing patents in the pre-6G space, according to Entrepreneur India2. He also said the company was building its own satellite communications stack and had demonstrated it to the communications minister, the report said.

At the JIO press conference in Mumbai, Ambani said the company's end-to-end proprietary technology stack, developed by a team of 12,000 engineers, had resulted in over 7,220 patent filings, above the 6,817 reported as of March-end. He linked this technological depth to the pace of network expansion and new service launches. Citing the 5G rollout, he said Jio completed it in 19 months, installing a tower every minute of a 12-hour working day to cover 99% of the country's population.

On the services side, Ambani pointed to the company's recent partnership with Google's Gemini, which he said co-created a new market and added 30 million new subscribers for the flagship AI product. He also said Jio plans to launch a voice AI service offering transcription and summarisation across 12 Indian languages to its users at no extra cost.

Ahead of the listing
The developments come as Jio Platforms heads towards its initial public offering. According to Entrepreneur India2, Ambani described the IPO as "a great responsibility", noting that it will be Reliance's first public issue in 30 years.

Subscribers and network reach have long been the yardsticks for telecom operators. With filings now spanning 5G, early 6G, satellites and AI, Jio Platforms has put intellectual property on that list too. As Reliance prepares for its first public issue in three decades, the question for the market is how this IP base translates into services, and into value, in the years ahead.
