Is PEPE dead? Here are two more meme coins to consider instead

Pepe, a popular meme coin, has experienced a decline in its explosive price performance. Facing competition from newer meme coins, Pepe struggles to reclaim its all-time high. However, emerging meme coins like Pepe Unchained and Flockerz are gai...

Pepe is a meme coin inspired by the popular internet meme Pepe the Frog. It has a market cap above $3 billion. The frog-themed meme coin has recorded a 600% surge in a year. However, the PEPE price action in recent months has been nothing short of slow.

Pepe is not explosive any more

Meme coins are known for their explosive price performance. They make headlines by climbing up the charts within days or even hours. The triggers can be a broader market surge, internal development milestones, or even a nod by popular internet personalities.

While Pepe was one of the most successful meme coins of 2023 and the first part of 2024, things are changing now. Pepe became an overnight sensation last year, growing to a billion-dollar market cap. That generated returns in four-digit ROIs for investors who grabbed the opportunity early.

The first half of 2024 was also generous to Pepe. Despite the growing competition in the market, Pepe went on to hit an all-time high of $0.00001718 on May 27, 2024. Interestingly, Pepe is selling 40% down from its all-time high now.

Leading meme coins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu also tell a similar story. They are around 80% down from their all-time highs. Although DOGE, SHIB, and PEPE hold onto the first three places in the meme coin chart, they are lukewarm now.

While DOGE and SHIB are large enough to withstand serious competition, Pepe is not. It is facing fierce competition from new meme coins. Earlier this year, Pepe lost the third position as Solana meme coins like Bonk and Dogwifhat stole its spotlight.

Since meme coin investors are largely interested in assets that can give them quick gains, established ones like Pepe, Dogecoin, and Shiba Inu are losing their charm. That explains why they are struggling to reclaim their all-time highs.

For example, assets like POPCAT and NEIRO were trending last month. But trends are rapidly shifting. Investors are already on the hunt for newer alternatives that can give them explosive returns. Here are the top new meme coins that have caught their attention

1. Pepe Unchained (PEPU) – The utility-centric Pepe has raised $25 million in presale

Meme coins are often dismissed as speculative assets that solely rely on community support. Pepe Unchained contradicts this idea with a Layer-2 network solely dedicated to meme coins. It is set to launch in the third phase of the roadmap.

Pepe Unchained is building its community, drawing over 40,000 followers on Twitter (now X) and over 10,000 Telegram members. Influencers have also been boosting their presence among investors.

For example, crypto channel 99Bitcoins, with 700,000 subscribers, recently featured the project. Pepe Unchained’s utility and meme appeal are highlighted in the video.
The Layer-2 blockchain network sets the project apart. It offers a functional infrastructure that could potentially improve transaction efficiency and speed in the meme coin market.

For instance, Ethereum, despite being the earliest smart contract chain, is frequently criticised for slow processing times and high fees during peak markets. Layer-2 solutions such as Polygon, Arbitrum, and Base have played a key role in taking some load off the main network.

Pepe Unchained’s Layer-2 zeroes in on meme coins, which have unique demands due to their volatile nature and high-volume trading. It could improve transaction speed and reduce costs.

The project’s social media presence highlights its focus on both the cultural appeal of memes and the technical needs of crypto users. In a market that often prioritises short-term hype over long-term utility, PEPU stands out.

With utility, PEPU has the potential to position itself as more than a passing trend. In the ongoing presale, PEPU tokens are available at fixed discounted prices.

2. Flockerz – Decentralisation matters

Flockerz ($FLOCK) may look like another experimental meme coin with a quirky bird theme. Yes, it is quintessentially fun and vibrant on the outside, like all meme coins.

However, beyond this quirky identity, Flockerz is rallying a community that has more control over the project than typical crypto projects. At the core of Flockerz is a commitment to decentralisation. Here, every user has a voice.

Flockerz will launch a vote-to-earn model to support its decentralisation goals. As the term implies, the platform will reward investors for votes they cast on various community proposals.

This way, community members wouldn’t be confined to the role of passive holders. Instead, they can potentially become active decision-makers. In addition, the reward model could fuel engagement. The Flockerz presale has flown past the $1 million milestone.

The platform is creating a flock bound by collective values. As the competition in the meme coin market grows fierce, vibrant branding is not enough to stand out. Values matter, too.

With investors becoming more wary of projects where a few developers call all the shots from the top Flockerz’s idea of a community that runs the show has the potential to generate buzz.

Flockerz recognises the risks of centralised control, learning from the past missteps of others. When power becomes too centralised, it can have dire consequences. The infamous $15 million theft from the Pepe ecosystem serves as a reminder. A meme coin community needs to keep the team in check.

In addition to vote-to-earn incentives, Flockerz has set aside 25% of its token supply for passive rewards. It keeps the perks flowing for those in the flock.
