Asset allocation: Gold leads as equity returns diverge in 2026 so far
Welcome to TrendMap, your guide to the performance of different investment segments. In this edition, we present a 10-year performance tracker of various asset classes. By Sameer Bhardwaj

Precious metals outshine equities over 10 years
Asset-class performance has been sharply divergent in 2026. Gold, the clear leader, has been supported by demand for safe haven assets amid geopolitical uncertainty, and shifting interest-rate expectations. Silver, however, has moved in the opposite direction and ranks among the weak est performers this year. The divergence reflects the different forces driving the two precious metals. Unlike gold, silver also depends heavily on industrial consumption, making it more sensitive to the broader economic outlook.Equities too have displayed divergence across market-cap segments. Small caps have outperformed their larger counter parts, while mid caps have been relatively subdued and large caps have lagged signifi cantly. The dispersion shows that equity market performance has been far from uniform, with weakness in heavyweight stocks pulling down the large-cap segment.

Debt has presented a mixed picture as well. Long-duration government securities have trailed short-term debt instruments. Uncertainty around inflation, interest rates and crude oil prices can make longer duration bonds more vulnerable to price fluctuations, while short-term instruments are relatively less sensitive to changes in interest rates.

Long-term performance
Over the 10-year period, precious metals occupy the top two positions, with silver ahead of gold. Their performance highlights how precious metals can complement equi ties and debt in a diversified portfolio. Among equities, mid caps have delivered the strongest long-term performance, followed by small caps, while large caps have lagged both segments. This points to the long-term return potential of smaller companies, although such opportunities come with greater volatility. Debt sits at the lower end of the 10-year return table, with short-term debt marginally ahead of long-duration government securities. Its role, however, extends beyond returns, as debt can provide portfolio stability and help balance the higher volatility associ ated with growth assets.Source: Bloomberg and ACE MF. *2026 data is YTD based on 6 October 2026 closing values.
