Visa denied, trip cancelled: Can travel insurance help you recover your losses?
Visa rejection can be an expensive setback for travellers. Of the 1.15 million Schengen visa applications filed by Indians in 2025, around 1.81 lakh (nearly 16%) were rejected, as per European Commission data on short stay visas. Indians, therefore, collectively lost around Rs 160 crore last year, based on the current Schengen visa processing fee of € 90.

For an individual traveller, the amount may seem small compared with the overall cost of an overseas holiday. But visa fees are non-refundable, so a rejection means losing money, in addition to a cancelled trip. And rejection is hardly a remote possibility. In 2025, India recorded the second-highest number of Schengen visa rejections, after Türkiye. More importantly, it could dash your hopes of a holiday to the destination of your choice.

This is where visa rejection insurance cover comes in.

What’s on offer?

Visa rejection is generally not covered under standard international travel insurance policies, although some insurers include the benefit in their premium plans. However, a handful of insurers now offer protection against this expense, either as part of their regular travel insurance policies or as add ons—optional rider benefits that necessitate additional premium payment.

Most insurers reimburse the non-refundable visa fee, not the cost of a trip that may be cancelled due to the rejection. Some group products offered through partners may also provide trip cancellation cover, but this is still an evolving category. “The benefit is primarily intended for leisure and business travel,” says Chandrakant Said,Vice president, Consumer Underwriting, Tata AIG General Insurance.

Such covers are meant to cover losses when visas are rejected for reasons beyond travellers’ control, for no fault of theirs. “In many cases, embassies do not provide a specific reason for the rejection. On merits of the case, claims are processed as per policy terms and conditions in such a scenario,” says Said. Apart from this, there can also be temporary changes in a country’s approach to visa applications.

The proposition sounds straightforward: pay a relatively small additional premium and get your visa fee back if your applica tionis rejected. “The ‘refund of visa fees’ benefit covers only the non-refundable visa application fee. However, some plans also offer trip cancellation cover in case of visa rejection, which can reimburse other non refundable expenses, such as flight tickets, accommodation and other pre-booked travel arrangements,” says Manas Kapoor, Head - Travel Insurance, Policybazaar.

The visa rejection add-on cover must be purchased along with a standard travel insurance policy before you send in your visa application. “If the cover is purchased after the visa has already been rejected, then any claim is not admissible,” says Kapoor.

Caveats dampen appeal

The list of conditions to get claim ap proval is long. “The coverage amount is nominal, and there are several eligibility conditions,” points out Mumbai-based chartered accountant and insurance consultant Mayank Gosar, CEO, Softcon Capital. You will be eligible for the claim only if the visa is rejected despite your documentation being in order. “Visa rejection issued by the embassy is an important document that claimants need to submit for reimbursement under such covers,” adds Said.

The key exclusions—when the cover will not reimburse the expenses —are generally linked to the reason for the visa rejection. “For instance, if the rejection is due to errors in bookings, incomplete documentation or documents not submitted as per the visa checklist, the claim may not be cov ered,” says Kapoor.

Similarly, if the visa is rejected due to any criminal action or proceedings against the customer, it would typically be excluded. “If the visa is rejected due to misleading or fraudulent information/documentation submitted by the applicant, insufficient explanation or evidence of the purpose of travel, past immigration violations and past or current criminal history of the insured, the visa cost will not be reimbursed,” says an IndusInd spokesperson.

Other exclusions include passport issues, such as damage, expiry or invalidity, an invalid reference letter, or in adequate financial means to support the stay in the destination country.

Also, immigration or employment related visas are not covered. “The primary focus of travel insurance continues to be medical coverage overseas rather than visa rejection,” says Said.
