My son recently became an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Earlier, he had insurance coverage in India. Should he continue that or take a new one in India?

Kapil Mehta Co-Founder, SecureNow Insurance Broker: If your son is satisfied with his existing health insurance policy, he should continue it, irrespective of his acquiring foreign citizenship. Retaining the policy allows him to complete the applicable waiting periods and preserve continuity benefits. After five continuous years of coverage, claims generally cannot be contested on grounds of misrepresentation or non-disclosure, except in cases of proven fraud.

However, most Indian health insurance policies cover medical expenses incurred only in India. If your son plans to live primarily overseas, he should obtain a policy offering international coverage. While health insurance regulations do not specifically require policyholders to report a change in citizenship, he should inform the insurer to update his KYC details and avoid complications during claim settlement.

He can generally continue renewing his Indian health insurance policy while residing abroad, subject to the insurer’s terms. He should also confirm whether his change in residency affects policy eligibility or coverage.

My son is now a foreign citizen and holds an OCI card. I would like to understand what health and life insurance options are available to him in India. Can an OCI cardholder buy or continue an Indian health insurance policy and term life insurance? Are there any restrictions, additional documentation, medical tests or differences in premiums?

Sarbvir Singh Joint Group CEO, PB Fintech: Yes, your son can absolutely buy and maintain both health and term life insurance policies in India. OCI holders get full access to standard health and term plans with coverage limits comparable to global offerings, but at significantly lower premiums. Hospitalisation costs in India are considerably lower than abroad, which translates to better value on insurance premiums. Some insurers do ask for OCI certification and address verification, but the process is standard.

Medical underwriting follows normal protocols, no OCI-specific surcharges on premiums. You pay based on health profile and coverage level. If your son returns to India later, policies purchased now continue without interruption. No fresh underwriting is needed. Before deciding, it’s worth comparing available plans online and customising based on his specific healthcare needs and budget. Each person’s situation is different.
