Mumbai rains: Waterlogging is risky for your vehicle; 5 ways you can make your car monsoon proof through motor insurance
Industry data clearly indicates a substantial increase in weather-related claims during the monsoon, primarily driven by incidents of flooding, waterlogging, and rain-induced vehicle collisions. What this annual pattern of claims teaches us is the...

However, taking simple precautions, such as avoiding waterlogged areas and understanding your insurance policy's coverage can go a long way in ensuring peace of mind. At its core, insurance is a partnership, and being informed and cautious enables both the insured and the insurer to manage risks more effectively.
What should you do?
1. Check your vehicle's health: To start with, a basic but essential step is checking your vehicle's health. Need not to mention that worn-out tires can easily skid on wet roads, poor braking could cost precious seconds in an emergency, and malfunctioning lights reduce visibility for both you and others on the road. Make sure that the tire pressure is optimal, brakes are in good shape and responsive, wipers are streak-free, and headlights are bright and functional. It may sound routine, but these checks are your first line of defence in unpredictable monsoon traffic and roads.2. Be careful with your parking: Another crucial aspect is where you park. Avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas, no matter how convenient. Water accumulation can submerge your car partially or even fully, leading to electrical short circuit or engine failure. Parking under trees or near electric poles can also be risk, especially during storms, as falling branches and live wires are common culprits for serious vehicle damage. Always look for covered or elevated parking spots whenever possible.
3. Don't drive on waterlogged road: One of the most expensive mistakes a car driver can make during the monsoon is trying to drive through waterlogged roads. Not only is this unsafe and life threatening, but it can lead to long-term mechanical damage-especially to the engine. Driving through deep water increases the risk of water entering the air intake or exhaust, leading to a hydrostatic lock, a condition where water seizes the engine's pistons. The mistake most people make is trying to restart the car in this condition, which worsens the damage and can lead to an engine failure.
Remember, it is wise to never try to start a vehicle that has stalled in water. Instead, call your insurer or roadside assistance provider and have it towed. It may feel like a hassle in the moment, but it will save you from larger expenses and denied claims later.
4. Be a more patient driver during rains: On the road, patience is your best insurance. Wet roads make it slippery and increases braking distances significantly. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, avoid overtaking and reduce your speed, especially on bends and slopes. Visibility is often poor, and road surfaces can hide potholes or open manholes with rain water. The rule of thumb during monsoon: slow and steady keeps your car safe.
5. Get add-on motor insurance protection: It is also advisable to review your car insurance policy well in advance of the monsoon season. Check whether it includes essential add-ons such as zero depreciation cover, engine protection, or roadside assistance. If these are missing, this is a prudent time to consider an upgrade. While these enhancements may increase your premium marginally, they can offer significant financial relief in the event of unforeseen damage.
The monsoon doesn't have to translate into insurance hassles or expensive repairs. With a proactive approach-through timely vehicle maintenance, cautious driving, and adequate insurance coverage-you can navigate the season confidently. As with most things in life, taking preventive measures is far wiser than dealing with avoidable setbacks later.
