Mediclaim vs health insurance: 5 things to know

The hospitalisation cover in Mediclaim is limited and typically does not exceed Rs.5 lakh, whereas in health insurance, one can select higher cover which can go up to crores.

1.Health insurance is comprehensive and covers several medical expenses, including hospitalisation, whereas Mediclaim typically only covers hospitalisation-related costs for specified illness.
2.There are no add-on covers with Mediclaim but many add-on covers, such as critical illness, maternity benefit and infertility cover, are available with health insurance.
3.The hospitalisation cover in Mediclaim is limited and typically does not exceed Rs.5 lakh, whereas in health insurance, one can select higher cover which can go up to crores.
4.Since Mediclaim has a lower coverage, the cost is lower compared to health plans.
5.Both Mediclaim and health insurance offer financial protection against medical emergencies.
