ABVKY Scheme 2026: Lost Your Job? You May Get Temporary Income Support
Losing a job can put immediate pressure on household finances. The Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana (ABVKY) is an ESIC welfare scheme that provides cash relief to eligible insured workers who become unemployed.
ESIC has extended the scheme for another year, from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.
But the benefit is not automatic. Your ESIC contribution record and the reason for unemployment must meet the applicable conditions.

What is the ABVKY scheme?
ABVKY was introduced by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) to provide financial support to insured workers during a spell of unemployment.
According to ESIC's scheme documentation, eligible insured persons can receive cash relief for a maximum of 90 days.
The scheme is intended as temporary support while an unemployed worker looks for another source of income.

How much can you get under ABVKY?
Under ESIC's documented ABVKY provisions, the relief is 50% of the claimant's average daily earnings.
The benefit can be paid for up to 90 days of unemployment.
Importantly, the 50% rate should not be confused with the original ABVKY rate. ESIC records show that the rate was initially 25% and was subsequently enhanced to 50%.
Example: If the eligible average daily earnings are ₹1,000, the indicative relief would be ₹500 per eligible day, subject to ESIC's calculation and approval.

Who is eligible for ABVKY in 2026?
The latest PIB release says an insured person must have been in insurable employment for at least 12 months immediately before becoming unemployed.
The person must also have contributed for at least 78 days in one completed contribution period during the 12 months immediately preceding unemployment.
These conditions are important because simply being registered under ESIC does not mean every unemployed worker will qualify for the benefit.

When can your ABVKY claim be rejected?
ABVKY does not cover every type of job loss.
According to the latest government notification, unemployment arising from misconduct, lockout or superannuation is excluded. The rules also exclude cases involving conviction for making a false statement under the ESI Act.
Therefore, workers should check both their contribution history and the circumstances of their unemployment before assuming they qualify.

The big advantage: A financial cushion after job loss
For an eligible worker, ABVKY can provide an important temporary income cushion at a time when regular salary has stopped.
The benefit can cover up to 90 days, with relief calculated at 50% of average daily earnings under ESIC's documented scheme provisions.
The government has also highlighted online claim submission and processing and direct benefit transfer (DBT) to beneficiaries' bank accounts as measures intended to speed up settlement.
ABVKY has a major limitation: It is not long-term unemployment insurance

ABVKY has a major limitation: It is not long-term unemployment insurance
ABVKY should not be treated as a substitute for a long-term income source.
ESIC describes the benefit as being available for up to 90 days once in the lifetime of the worker, with the relief claimable in one or more spells.
The scheme is also limited to people covered by the ESI framework who satisfy the applicable conditions. So workers should continue to maintain an emergency fund rather than depend entirely on ABVKY after losing their job.

ABVKY 2026: 5 things to check before you claim
If you have lost your job and were covered by ESIC, check these points:
1. Employment history: Were you in insurable employment for at least 12 months immediately before unemployment?
2. Contributions: Did you contribute for at least 78 days in one completed contribution period during the preceding 12 months?
3. Reason for unemployment: Does your situation fall within the conditions for claiming the benefit?
4. Claim process: Keep your ESIC and bank details updated for the claim and DBT process.
5. Benefit limit: Remember that ABVKY is temporary and is available for up to 90 days once in a lifetime under ESIC's documented provisions.
The scheme has been extended until June 30, 2027, so eligible insured workers can continue to access this unemployment relief during the current extension period.
